Native to the Mediterranean and Middle East, this evergreen tree is well known for its pods that are used around the globe as a substitute for chocolate - Carob. Extremely drought tolerant and readily withstands high temperatures above 40 °C. Young trees or shoots of mature trees are susceptible to frost damage below -4 °C. Requires well drained soils. In hot, dry areas of Europe they are often planted as a hedge. Attains a height approx. 10m high if left unpruned.
