Eupatorium atrorubens is a more compact alternative to its larger-growing cousin, Eupatorium megalophyllum, which can reach up to 3 metres. At around 1.5 metres tall, E. atrorubens offers the opportunity to introduce similar texture and form into the landscape at a lower height. Preferring dappled shade makes it perfect for bringing Spring colour to shady gardens. Heads of purple-mauve flowers sit on top of large attractive green leaves that have a purple tinge. Prune once a year to remove spent flowers or reduce its height. Fifteen years ago we planted a hedge of E. atrorubens at the entrance to a doctor's surgery, where it is still thriving in a south facing position. Frost-free climes only.
