Strobilanthes gossypinus
Sold out
Buy 1 for $14.00 / Buy 5 for $60.00
Native to India and Sri Lanka, Strobilanthes gossypinus forms a rounded, dense mound with evergreen leaves covered in silver-grey fur. The word 'gossypinus' means cotton-like in latin, which refers to the masses of shiny hairs on the surface of the leaves, providing a shimmering silvery gold appearance in the sunlight. A designer's dream, this plant looks neat all year round and its unique foliage colour and texture contrasts beautifully along side other plants. We have found Strobilanthes gossypinus to perform well in both full sun and shady situations, whether in the garden or in pots or planters. Tolerates dry conditions and coastal spots where the furry leaves resist salt laden winds. The only requirement for this plant is a frost free environment and free draining soil. Whilst it's foliage is the feature of this plant, it does produce soft mauve, tubular flowers in elongated panicles above the foliage. Grows approximately 1m high x 1.5m wide.

Attractive even without flowers. Through late Spring and Summer upright 10cm tall spikes of rose violet flowers appear. A stunning floral display. Enjoys full sun and (as with all Teucrium) well drained soil. Can handle dry periods to the point of being able to become Summer dormant.
