Sempervivums are always an intriguing genus of plants. The tight little rosettes of fleshy leaves have an interest from architecture to art. This particular Sempervivum has added intrigue by having silvery filaments connecting leaves one to another. On top of this the plant changes colour in the winter cold from green to a deep red. Particularly good in pots, Sempervivums can be planted anywhere from in old boots to garden borders.

A sculpturally interesting grass of architectural quality. Where Stipa gigantea can't be grown due to climatic difficulties, Sporobolus wrightii can fill the niche. A large grass (1.2-1.8m tall), the foliage is light grey/green from which soft feathery seed heads are produced in Summer. These 'feathers' change to a golden straw colour in late Summer and then to a bronze in Autumn. Best cut back in early Spring to allow the new growth to look fresh and clean. Native to Arizona, California, Texas and northern Mexico. Very drought tolerant but will look at its best with some irrigation. Will grow in all soil types in full sun.

Strobilanthes gossypinus
$14.00
Buy 1 for $14.00 / Buy 5 for $60.00
Native to India and Sri Lanka, Strobilanthes gossypinus forms a rounded, dense mound with evergreen leaves covered in silver-grey fur. The word 'gossypinus' means cotton-like in latin, which refers to the masses of shiny hairs on the surface of the leaves, providing a shimmering silvery gold appearance in the sunlight. A designer's dream, this plant looks neat all year round and its unique foliage colour and texture contrasts beautifully along side other plants. We have found Strobilanthes gossypinus to perform well in both full sun and shady situations, whether in the garden or in pots or planters. Tolerates dry conditions and coastal spots where the furry leaves resist salt laden winds. The only requirement for this plant is a frost free environment and free draining soil. Whilst it's foliage is the feature of this plant, it does produce soft mauve, tubular flowers in elongated panicles above the foliage. Grows approximately 1m high x 1.5m wide.

Madeira Germander is a plant we have grown for some time without venturing to propagate it - until now. It is a great small evergreen shrub to 80cm with scallop edged apple green leaves. Attractive even without flowers. Through late Spring and Summer upright 10cm tall spikes of rose violet flowers appear. A stunning floral display. Enjoys full sun and (as with all Teucrium) well drained soil. Can handle dry periods to the point of being able to become Summer dormant. A great plant that should be used in the landscape more regularly.
