Discovered in 1972 by French lavender farmer Pierre Grosso in Provence, France, this exceptional variety was selected from a collection of unusually vigorous plants growing in an abandoned field. Since then, it has become one of the most widely grown lavenders in the world, favoured for its uniform habit, high oil production and ease of harvest.

Lavandula ‘Grosso’ forms superbly even growth, naturally developing into almost perfect silver-grey spheres. Through Summer, rich dark violet flower spikes are produced evenly across the plant, creating a striking display in the garden. We grow a handful of lavenders in our gravel garden, of which ‘Grosso’ is the only Summer flowering form. Equally at home in ornamental plantings, gravel gardens and mass plantings. Requires full sun and excellent drainage. Drought tolerant once established. Approximately 80cm x 80cm.

We took these photographs at the beautiful Wanaka Lavender Farm, New Zealand.
