A fabulous perennial prized for its striking steel-blue globes held proudly above spiny grey-green foliage from late summer into autumn. The flowers are highly attractive to bees and make excellent additions to fresh or dried arrangements. Growing to around 1.2m tall, it combines beautifully with ornamental grasses, Achillea, Agastache and Salvia, while also providing wonderful contrast against clipped silver-foliaged shrubs such as Helichrysum, Santolina and Teucrium.

Good drainage is essential for success. In our gravel garden, plants reach their full size and flower well, whereas those grown in heavier clay soils have remained smaller and less floriferous. Best planted in full sun in a well-drained position.

Fun fact: The name Echinops comes from the Greek words echinos (hedgehog) and ops (appearance), a reference to the spiky, globe-shaped flower heads.

  • All plants are grown in a 100mm diameter pot
  • Plants are usually sent on a Monday each week to ensure they arrive prior to the weekend. All orders to VIC, SA and QLD are sent Express Post.
