A fast growing, hardy evergreen shrub with silvery grey green foliage and a neat rounded form. Makes a great screen or hedge particularly in cooler districts where the growth rate is slower. Small creamy white flowers that carry a sweet scent are present in late Summer and Autumn. Tolerant of a wide range of conditions including frost and coastal conditions. Height to 4m if left unpruned.

A deciduous Berberis with a slender narrow upright growth habit. Grows to 1m high and 50cm wide. 'Pow Wow' prefers full sun and good drainage. Light green, splashed with cream foliage that is a vivid lime green in Summer with new growth. Autumn foliage is spectacular giving this plant its name 'Pow Wow'. Intense orangey pink to red tones adorn the upright spiky stems in late Autumn and early Winter.

On a quick trip to Cape Town in 2017 we first noticed this compact, dwarf Natal Plum growing in several public landscape installations. Firstly, it was used to grow as a dense ground cover and secondly, it was grown as a low hedge. Carissa macrocarpa 'Green Carpet' has glossy emerald-green leaves and can be used across a range of landscapes from formal clipped gardens, to a spillover plant in coastal plantings. Tolerant of coastal conditions, poor soils and drought once established. A more robust looking plant will be achieved with regular irrigation. Fragrant white star-like flowers in Spring. Edible bright red fruit follow in Summer. Tolerant of mild frosts only. 30cm high x 150cm wide.

Carissa 'Desert Star' has a few common names in its native South Africa. Amatungulu is its Zulu name, otherwise it is referred to as Num-Num or Natal Plum. It is incredibly tough, drought resistant and easy to grow, although it doesn't appreciate frost. 'Desert Star' has large leathery, glossy, dark green leaves and wonderfully scented star-like white flowers. Red fruits are produced intermittently and are edible. It also has some Y-shaped thorns but these are greatly reduced in comparison to the original species. 'Desert Star' makes a very attractive hedge or specimen plant and is easily clipped to shape. Great for coastal conditions. Reaches to 1.5m x 1m wide.
