A classic German-bred mophead hydrangea known for its spectacular large flower heads which can reach up to 20cm across. Depending on the soil pH, the flowers range from rich rose pink in alkaline soils to deep violet-blue in acidic soils, creating a bold summer display. Its exceptional garden performance has been recognised with the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit.
With its vigorous, upright habit, 'Altona' is ideal for shaded to part shaded borders and large containers. It thrives in fertile, moist, well-drained soil with protection from the hot afternoon sun, rewarding gardeners with an abundance of long lasting blooms each season. Approx. 1.5 x 1.5m.
Fun Fact: Hydrangea macrophylla 'Altona' was bred in Germany in 1931 by horticulturist Heinrich Schadendorff. He named the cultivar after Altona, a historic district of Hamburg.
