A distinctive mophead hydrangea, often known as the 'Popcorn Hydrangea' due to its unusual spoon-shaped florets that create rounded flower heads resembling clusters of popcorn. Blooming from early to late summer, the flowers range from soft pink in alkaline soils to lavender blue in acidic soils and produce a delicate, sweet fragrance, something unusual for hydrangeas.
'Ayesha' is ideal for shaded to part-shaded borders, beneath trees in filtered light and large containers. Growing to approximately 1.2–1.5m high × 1.2–1.5m wide, it thrives in fertile, moist, well-drained soil with protection from the hot afternoon sun.
The photographs shown were taken by us at Mollymook on the NSW South Coast, where they were mass planted along the eastern side of a beachfront home. Seeing these hydrangeas flourishing in such a location is a good reminder of just how well they perform in Australia's temperate coastal gardens.
Fun Fact: 'Ayesha' was raised in New Zealand by amateur plantswoman Harriet Kirkpatrick in the mid-20th century. Its distinctive spoon-shaped florets are unlike those of almost any other hydrangea, making it one of the most recognisable and a highly sought after cultivar.
