A classic, German-bred mophead hydrangea, admired for its exceptionally large rounded flower heads and rich, vibrant colouring. The blooms open in deep rose pink tones in alkaline soils and develop striking blue to violet shades in acidic conditions.
With a vigorous, rounded habit, 'Hamburg' is ideal for shaded to part-shaded borders, cottage gardens and large containers. Growing to approximately 1.5m high × 1.5m wide, it thrives in fertile, moist, well-drained soil with protection from the hot afternoon sun. The long-lasting blooms are also excellent for cut flower arrangements, ageing beautifully as they dry.
Fun Fact: Hydrangea macrophylla 'Hamburg' was bred in Germany by horticulturist Heinrich Schadendorff and introduced in 1931. It forms part of a group of classic European mophead hydrangeas bred by Schadendorff, including 'Altona' and 'Europa', which remain popular garden varieties nearly a century later.
