Hydrangea macrophylla 'Nigra' is a distinctive mophead hydrangea prized for its striking, almost black-purple stems. The dark stems provide a beautiful contrast to the fresh green foliage and rounded flower heads, which range from soft blue in acidic soils to rose pink in alkaline conditions. The blooms gradually change colour as they mature, extending the season of interest through summer.
With a neat, rounded habit, 'Nigra' is well suited to shaded and part-shaded borders, beneath trees and containers. Growing to approximately 1-1.5m high × 1-1.5m wide, it thrives in fertile, moist, well-drained soil with protection from harsh afternoon sun. The dark stems also make an interesting feature in winter and are excellent for cut flower arrangements.
