Hydrangea macrophylla 'Président R. Touchard' is a striking mophead hydrangea prized for its large, rounded flower heads and exceptionally rich colouring. In acidic soils, the blooms develop deep violet-purple tones, while in more alkaline conditions they range from dark rose-pink to cherry red. The large flower heads are held above soft green foliage, creating a bold and elegant summer display.
A compact, bushy variety with a naturally rounded habit, 'Président R. Touchard' is ideal for shaded to part-shaded borders and large containers. Growing to approximately 1.2–1.5m high × 1.2–1.5m wide, it thrives in fertile, moist, well-drained soil with protection from the hot afternoon sun. It is also an excellent choice for cut flowers, with the richly coloured blooms drying beautifully.
Fun Fact: Hydrangea macrophylla 'Président R. Touchard' was introduced in Belgium in 1938 by renowned nurseryman Emil Draps. It is also known by the historic name 'Souvenir du Président Touchard', meaning “in memory of President Touchard”.
