We find this handsome and extremely tough evergreen shrub is underutilised in Australian gardens. Osmanthus heterophyllus ‘Purpureus’ features glossy holly-like foliage and beautifully fragrant Autumn flowers. New growth emerges with deep purple-bronze tones before gradually maturing to deep glossy green through the warmer months, creating wonderful contrast amongst silver, dark-foliaged or structural plantings.
In Autumn, when much of the garden is beginning to slow down, masses of tiny white flowers appear along the stems, filling the air with a rich, sweet perfume. While the flowers are small and often go unnoticed visually, their intoxicating fragrance carries beautifully through the garden. Slightly slower growing than some screening shrubs, but well worth the patience.
Ideal for hedging, screening or feature planting, it is hardy, adaptable and responds well to pruning. Excellent cold hardiness. Best suited to full sun or part shade. Approximately 2–4m high x 1.5–2m wide.
