Blue Globe Thistle is a fabulous looking plant. Late Summer and early Autumn it produces prickly blue balls that stand well above the foliage. Combines well with ornamental grasses, Achillea, Agastache and Salvia. Also provides a great contrast to clipped silver foliage shrubs like Helichrysum, Santolina and Teucrium.

Drainage is the key. Our gravel garden provides excellent drainage where the plants reach full size (1.2m). We previously had them in soil with a high clay content where the plants were stunted and lacked good flowering.

After trying and failing to grow Echium candicans numerous times in different positions, we nearly gave up on Echium altogether. That is until we changed to a different species. The frost blackened and killed E. candicans where as E. virescens will handle harsh overnight frost. There is a compromise on colour if you are wanting strong blue flowers as E. virescens is more a lilac to pink colour. Echium virescens is still a stunning plant in full flower in early Spring and reaches a height and width of 2m. Drought tolerant, but it won't handle excess water.

    Elaeagnus Pungens Shrubs

    Buy 1 for $13.00 / Buy 5 for $55.00

Often referred to as Silverberry. We have found that in our searing heat during Summer (45℃ +) many plants struggle. Elaeagnus pungens is not one of them. We have pruned our plants into 1m x 1m spheres and in another area as a 1m x 0.5m hedge. The golden bronze new growth has a stunning effect, particularly when plants have been shaped. Very tough and hardy (-5℃ to 45℃) with no supplementary watering. Produces edible berries in Autumn and Winter which contain Omega 3 and Lycopene (reputedly a cancer fighting agent). Elaeagnus harbours nitrogen fixing organisms so is able to grow in poor soils.

Also known as American Purple Love Gross, initially Eragrostis spectabilis looks nothing like it's name suggests and just green grassy leaves that don't stand out in any way. That is until it flowers which come gradually through Summer in a red purple haze of fluff. Everything then ages to a beautiful caramel latte brown during Autumn and Winter. Grows in all soils and handles it dry. Truly unique and beautiful when at its full height. 60 x 60cm.

A Californian native that fits in well with Mediterranean plantings. The unusual woolly silver-grey leaves are a feature in themselves. Flowering adds to the interest with clusters of creamy white flowers that form a dinner plate size, and turn copper rust colour as they age. Commonly known as Buckwheat. Handles drought, some frost and coastal conditions. Good drainage is a must as this Eriogonum doesn't tolerate wet or waterlogged soils. Grows to 1m tall and up to 2m wide. We are excited to be able to offer this plant. It would be great to see it grown in more gardens.

Sharply toothed, but still relatively soft, crisp green strap-like foliage provides a wonderful foliage contrast. Often grown just for its foliage. In late Summer and early Autumn green spears appear through the foliage and rise to 1-1.5m with greenish white thimble shaped thistle like flowers. Unique in many ways, Eryngium agavifolium mixes well with ornamental grasses, sedums and agapanthus. Requires good winter drainage.

The profusion of flowers gives the impression of a blue haze when planted amongst other perennials. Performs well in well drained soil and full sun. Handles neglect and drought but not Winter wet or poorly drained soil. Height to 1 metre in flower.

Attractive mid green basal rosettes which are the main structure of the plant for most of the year. The flowers arise to 80cm above the basal rosette in late Spring and Summer. Globular heads of snowy white, tinged with a hint of metallic blue make for a floral statement amongst any plant combination. We like to leave the dead heads on the plants after flowering. This way we ensure a little self-seeding in and around original plant increasing our clump size. Somewhat drought tolerant once established. 20cm x 80cm in flower. Prefers well drained soils and full sun.
