Purple Moor Grass is a tussock forming perennial grass that prefers wet sites or at least garden positions that don't dry out with plenty of humus. It is a fine textured pretty grass that turns a muted orange/yellow in Autumn. The flowers appear long and wispy but when seen collectively they give the impression of a purple haze, hence the name Purple Moor Grass. Native to North Africa, Europe and parts of Asia. Named after Chilean naturalist, Juan Ignacio Molinia. Wonderful mass planted. Height 90cm.

Being fortunate enough to observe this plant on a trip to Kirstenbosch Botanic Gardens in Cape Town, South Africa, we decided to investigate further. Olivier Filippi sings its praises in his drought tolerant gravel garden in the south of France. He reports it to be drought tolerant and beautiful in form. African Boxwood grows slowly to 2m x 75cm, has dark green oval shaped leaves and deep red new growth. We have planted it in our own dry garden to compliment greys and silvers of Mediterranean plants including Phlomis, Rosemary and Dwarf Olives. Clips very well, is long lived and very adaptable.

'Six Hills Giant' has, and continues to be, a great garden favourite. A haze of lavender blue that sits 80cm above the earth and 1-1.5m wide is a sight to behold, particularly in the late afternoon light. It is a tough and easily grown plant but not for those who want low maintenance. We find that it needs cutting back at least three times a year to keep it at its finest. It can be untidy and flop around if left unattended. Good drainage is a requirement otherwise 'Six Hills Giant' may rot.

An early flowering new form of Catmint from Terra Nova Nurseries. Captivating bright lavender purple flowers rise above distinctive sweet scented foliage. Happy in sandy, stoney, gravelly or poor soils and enjoys drier conditions. However, soils that are prone to water logging will quickly suffocate Nepeta. Prune back after flowering for a repeat performance. 10cm high x 60cm wide. Excellent ground cover or container plant - works well in a hanging basket.
