Native to Baja, California has led to its common name - Baja Pitcher Sage. Interestingly it is named for a Russian physician and explorer of the 18th century, Ivan Ivanovich Lepechinia. Lepechinia hastata has blue green arrow shaped leaves on a plant that reaches 1-1.5 metres tall. It behaves very similarly to herbaceous salvias. The foliage is pleasantly aromatic, reminiscent of mild disinfectant. The flowers are magenta in colour, however in combination with the calyx and flower stem they have an overall smokey hue to the magenta. Autumn-Winter flowering and drought tolerant once established. Sometimes compared with Echium as the flowers are of a similar size (30cm), just a different colour.

Native to New Zealand. Sometimes called NZ Iris. Brilliantly coloured with a prominent golden yellow central stripe. Maximum height between 40 and 60cm depending on conditions. Handles cold to -12ºC. Masses of pure white star shaped flowers are produced in mid Spring and rise to just above the foliage. This is followed by bright yellow seed capsules in the Autumn which contain brilliant orange seeds. We haven't seen seeds in our climate, perhaps needing cooler weather. Great container plant, specimen plant and wonderful in mass plantings. Requires good drainage and moisture. Out of interest, the name Libertia honours Marie-Anne Libert who was a Belgian botanist in the 19th century.
