Known as Pillar of Smoke or Australian Plume Grass. We have grown this native grass in our stock beds for the past three years. It is one of the earliest of our ornamental grasses to flower in Spring. Makes a dense mass of finely textured plumes giving the appearance of smoke. It is reported that if planted in moist well drained soil this grass will grow up to 2 metres tall. We have found it to not reach much above 1 metre, however it will vary from one microclimate to another. Austrostipa ramosissima holds its own amongst ornamental grasses. Its form and presence is like no other exotic or native grass.

Reliable. Durable. Hardy. Bergenia have been grown in gardens for centuries. Eden's Dark Margin is a newer variety that forms a mound of large, leathery, green leaves with pencil-like edges. The winter colour of the foliage is a deep burgundy red. The colder the winter, the deeper the colour. In mid-spring the magenta pink flowers rise above the foliage on short stems. Tolerates poor soil and exposed sites, but doesn't do well in hot, dry conditions. Prefers semi-shade with compost rich soils and adequate moisture. 40cm high x 60cm wide.

The early days of discovering Bergenias were confined to gardens where Bergenias were often sprawling mats of creeping rhizomes often in a neglected shady corner. After visiting Beth Chatto's 'Gravel Garden' our mind has been positively affected. They were used as garden highlights not plants to be tucked away. Some varieties have remarkable Winter hues and brilliant Spring flowers. 'Bressingham White' is one of the best free flowering forms with pure white inflorescence. Suits shade or semi shade on NSW mid coast, but can handle more sun in climates south of Sydney. 'Bressingham White' has been awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit. 40cm high x 60cm wide. Tolerates poor soils, frost, shade and drought. The large rounded leaves make Bergenias a very useful plant for contrast in any garden.

A very hardy plant that handles drought, heat and as low as -10 °C. Typically 1m x 1m. Once plants have been established for a few years, red flower stalks may rise up to 1.5m above the foliage. These flowers are a wonder of the plant world, appearing almost triffid like, with bright green flowers and red bracts.
